Volterra (530 m.)
Important, historical, quiet resort with 11'200 inhabitants, in the western part of the region 40 km from the sea, on top of a hill south facing position with beautiful view, 48 km north-west from Siena, 65 km south-east from Pisa, 75 km south-west from Firenze.

All shops, restaurants etc. in the resort. Access: exit number "Firenze-Siena". Then road SS68 Colle Valdelsa. Access via a winding road. San Gimignano 20 km. Situated in an elevated panoramic position over the hilly Valle di Cecina countryside, Volterra has a marvellous Old Town with evidence from several bygone eras. It was one of the Etruscan capitals, even retaining part of the old wall. The Guarnacci museum has one of the best collections of Etruscan artwork. Volterra is also well-known for the processing of alabaster.
